Easy and Hard Practice Seminar
Leading a workshop at the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival in 2023Easy and Hard Practice Seminars are based on a forthcoming book (early 2027) that outlines a novel framework to practicing based on neuroscience and my own pedagogical background as a violin and viola professor and teaching artist. The three selections below are only examples of possible seminars, each course is tailored to the specific needs of the institution, conservatory, or university. This combination workshop and masterclass fulfills the needs of music students to develop and understand effective and healthy practice techniques. It serves to teach participants how to accelerate success in the practice room by empowering them to understand how to approach practicing and problem solving between lessons. In addition to the direct benefits for students, it also complements private lesson instruction by catalyzing student improvement between lessons. This supports the instructors as they need to spend less time reviewing concepts in subsequent lessons and teaching how to practice.

This applied seminar fulfills the needs of conservatory (or other highly motivated) music students to develop and understand effective and healthy practice techniques. It serves to complement private instruction and chamber music coaching by teaching participants how to accelerate success in the practice room, empowering them to understand how to approach practicing and problem solving between lessons/coachings. Beyond a standalone workshop, it supports students throughout the semester as they continue to develop their skills. This provides students with a framework and toolkit to continue learning and practicing at a high level, producing continued results even after a student has completed the seminar.

This workshop is designed for institutions and employees in the corporate space, and is the most customizable of these three seminars. The workshop begins with an overview of how easy and hard practice empower fundamental and developmental learning, and continues into a variety of topics including but not limited to optimizing learning strategies in new fields, memorization and recall, plateaus and peak performance, and developing presentation skills.
